Kristin Connor is the Executive Director of Atlanta-based CURE Childhood Cancer and has been for the past three years. She was a high-powered attorney with a leading law firm in Atlanta and 8 months pregnant when her unborn son, Brandon, was diagnosed in utero with neuroblastoma, the most aggressive form of pediatric cancer. Under careful medical scrutiny, it was determined when Brandon was nearly 2 that the tumor needed to be removed and San Francisco Childhren's Hospital the place to perform the risky surgery. The night before his operation, a routine MRI was performed and there was no tumor, miraculously. There was no medical explanation....it had been there and shown up on previous MRIs. The story made it in Good Housekeeping and even Wolf Blitzer and a panel of drs. debated how this could have happened on CNN.
Kristin's journey exposed her to many families whose children didn't have such a happy ending and they either suffered through tortuous treatment or didn't make it at all. She felt she couldn't leave those children and their families behind and resigned from the law firm to take the helm of one of the most aggressive fundraising organizations dedicated to funding cancer research in the United States. Under her leadership she has raised an astounding $3 million in 3 years for cancer research and to fund clinical trials to find a cure for childhood cancer. She tirelessly works day and night to support these children and their families with outreach programs as well, and heads up a bereavement program that is second to none. Kristin is so deserving of this honor and should be among the finalists of this contest.
